My medium is Linoleum Cut Printmaking.
Some of my first prints celebrate trees. I go bike riding around my neighborhood, and often look at the trees. There are trees that I call “city trees” that live between the street and someone’s lawn. They are usually large and old; their planting day long forgotten. Over time they’ve been lopped and topped, and they grow and live untended, hardly noticed. They stand, beautiful in their endurance. They give their tree gifts: their shade and rustling leaves, nesting and perches for birds and squirrels. I made a series of linoleum prints to honor these urban trees. Most of those trees are gone now, victims of construction, felled for a different kind of growth.
I continue to look at trees. I like to see what they are doing. They often seem to be having conversations with each other; sharing news and gossiping. Others look to be quietly enjoying each other’s company. They are very creative in the way they grow.I try to portray some of these things in my work.
